Silicates

The pictures show that the Scalewatcher treatment is also effective on water-containing silicates. The treatment creates more and smaller silicate crystals with smoother surface.

The scale of the ruler is in micrometers.

Rust

Red rust, Fe2O3  converts to black rust Fe3O4 by the treatment. Scalewatcher helps create conditions where loose red ferric rust is reduced and reorganized into black magnetite, a harder and more stable iron oxide layer. It does not create magnetite from nothing; it guides an existing corrosion process toward a different, often less troublesome, form.

Zebra mussels

Zebra mussels are an increasing problem in Northern Hemisphere water-intake systems, where they settle in pipes and restrict flow from rivers, lakes, or seawater intakes. Conventional control often relies on chloride or other chemical injection, which can be costly, hazardous, and environmentally undesirable. Since zebra mussel shells consist mainly of calcium carbonate, Scalewatcher treatment can interfere with shell formation in newly settled mussels. Field testing indicates that new mussels may still attach after treatment begins, but they are unable to develop a viable shell and eventually die. Existing established mussels are not removed by Scalewatcher alone, so the treatment is best positioned as a preventive anti-growth and anti-recolonization system, especially after mechanical or chemical cleaning.

Bacteria growth inhibited

Bacteria were inoculated in untreated (chlorinated) drinking water to breed for three days. (Left). After three days the water with bacteria was treated for two days, the difference observed, and pictured.

The difference is obvious. The bacteria are dying. This test simulates the real world where bacteria are growing on galvanized iron pipes.

This means for cooling towers that biofilm, foam and foul smell disappears.

BOD of wastewater ponds

A reduction in bacterial activity in waste- water ponds would generally be expected to reduce BOD, because it reflects the amount of oxygen microorganisms require to break down biodegradable organic matter.

Scale and algae removal in a cooling tower

In this cooling tower, the electrical conductivity went up from 320 to 1920 uS/cm and the TDS from 70 to 980 PPM within one month after the installation of Scalewatcher.

This indicates the capacity of the product to remove old scale layers and at the same time to clear the algae.

Struvite

Scalewatcher has positive experience with struvite-related scaling problems. Struvite — magnesium ammonium phosphate — is common in wastewater, sludge handling, digesters, pumps, pipework, centrifuges, and other areas where magnesium, ammonium, phosphate, and favorable pH conditions combine.
